Where to stay, and why it matters
Makkah is built on hills. A hotel 800 metres away can be an easy walk downhill and a hard climb back, which is why we quote walking minutes rather than distance alone.
Ajyad and the Jabal Omar side put you closest. Misfalah and the outer districts cost considerably less and rely on shuttles.
The rhythm of the day
The area around the Haram fills sharply before each prayer and empties afterwards. Arriving twenty minutes early makes a real difference to how easily you find a place.
Shops and restaurants around the Haram largely close during prayer and reopen afterwards. Plan meals around that rather than against it.
Practical notes
Distances inside the Haram complex are larger than they look from outside. If walking is difficult, wheelchairs are available within the complex and it is worth arranging this in advance rather than on the day.

- Agree taxi fares before setting off
- Carry a small bag for your footwear
- Keep a photo of your hotel entrance on your phone
