Makkah is built on hills, and this matters more than any brochure will tell you. A hotel 800 metres from the Haram can be a pleasant walk downhill and a genuinely hard climb back in the heat. It is why we quote walking minutes rather than distance alone, and why we will tell you about the gradient if you ask.
Ajyad and the Jabal Omar side put you closest, with the shortest and flattest approaches. Misfalah and the outer districts cost considerably less and rely on shuttles — a sensible trade if you would rather spend the difference on a longer stay.
The area around the Haram fills sharply in the half hour before each prayer and empties afterwards. Arriving twenty minutes early makes a real difference to how easily you find a place, particularly for Fajr and Maghrib.
