Travelling for Umrah as a family

How to plan around children — room configurations, pacing, and what to expect with young ones.

Rooms come first

Get the room configuration right and the rest follows. Connecting rooms and quad configurations are limited everywhere, so request them when you book rather than hoping at check-in.

A suite with a separate living area is often better value than two rooms for a family with young children, and considerably more comfortable on a longer stay.

Pace the itinerary down

Families consistently over-schedule. Plan roughly half of what you would as a couple, and leave genuinely empty days. Children tire in the heat faster than adults do.

Private transfers are worth the difference when travelling with children — waiting for a shared vehicle to fill with tired children is a poor start to any journey.

Practicalities

Bring a lightweight stroller that folds small. Distances within the Haram complex are significant, and carrying a sleeping child across them is harder than it sounds.

  • Request connecting rooms at booking
  • Choose private transfers over shared
  • Bring a compact, foldable stroller
  • Plan around nap times, not against them
  • Pack snacks children already like
